What are the best practices for using Email as a communication tool in business?

When employees are getting swamped with 50 to 100 emails a day, sometimes a very important message goes unread. Especially if it's not coming from higher up in the management chain.

There should be policies for people who are SENDING emails...okay, so you can only do this internally, but these policies should include making sure that emails always have a subject, so you can assess the content on first glance, and also, if the email is high priority, it should be sent flagged. If you're receiving that many emails a day, I'd also ask the family / friends to email you at home, unless it's urgent.
Reply:Prioity Task. Read all through , then mark the one more important unread or flagged.

Reply:You need to set aside periods of time throughout the day to go through your email and sort it out.

Put things from family/friend in one folder, business, co-workers in others. Then work your way through the important ones and read the friends/family ones later when you have free time.
